Last week I emailed several clubs and asked them for there views on the state of the under age game in Ireland. Shay L’Strange Secretary Lourdes Celtic FC had this to say;
Soccer in Ireland today is going through turbulent times. This has materialised in many ways and none more starkly than in the League of Ireland and its almost complete return to a part time league.
Another area of concern is the reduction in the financial resources of the FAI. Schoolboy football on the other hand should view these problems as an opportunity rather than a threat. The reason for this is the fact that schoolboy football due to its voluntary status was in a position to capitalise on the boom. This can be seen in the excellent training facilities that have sprung up across the city.
With schoolboy football in a healthy state from an infrastructure point of view it should now take the next step and aim to improve the style of football we play. To do this we need look no further than Spain, who without question is leading the world in this area.
This move to a more attractive style of football is not beyond us and can start with a reduction in the competitive nature of our game.
Another small step would be extension of the small sided game to include at least under 12 football (hopefully someone in the SFAI is reading this).
The change needed is a mindset one on the part of coaches, clubs and leagues. Also required is a willingness to allow children to play a game based on passing and skill. This will also require both coach and parent education away from a winning at all cost mentality.
